About the artist

West Marshall was born in Stanmore, Middlesex, in 1945 and studied at Willesden Technical College from 1958 to 1961 when he went to the Harrow School of Art where he studied until 1965. After a couple of years in Canada he settled in Norfolk where he set up and ran a pottery business. In 1988 he moved to Chesham in Buckinghamshire where he continued to make pottery and began to develop a fascination with drawing.
After the complexities of working with clay, West loves the simplicity and purity of the marks made by pencil on paper. Where colour is needed it is often introduced via a flat wash of watercolour- a technique influenced by his earlier technical drawing experience. Composition is important and where something is not considered necessary it is omitted. Where the three dimensionality of an object is interesting it will be expressed, but where it is not, an outline may suffice – the negative shapes taking a greater part.
